FOLK HEROES’ STORY DETAILS ABJECT POVERTY OF BACKCOUNTRY
by PETER THOMAS BUSCH
Peasants in the Brazilian hinterland were so poor they resorted to a nomadic life in oppositional defiance to government control.
Isis Valverde stars as Maria Bonita aka Pretty Maria in the tv mini series, Maria e o Cangaco (2025).
Maria is bound to the most famous of the nomadic bandits, Lampiao aka Virgulino Ferreira de Silva, roaming in search of money, food and opportunities to strike out against government oppression.
Director Sergio Machado follows the gang of social bandits around with the camera, in part to show their struggle, and in part to show just how poor the peasants were in Brazil, clinging to the day by living in partially constructed shacks during the 1930s.
Valverde creates a complicated character who has a nurturing side but also a ruthless outlaw side, showing Maria crying and emotional as often as she is striking out at the injustice of utter poverty at every opportunity.
Maria and Lampiao lead a small group of armed outlaws that show acts of charity to the poor but also expect assistance as they move on horseback from small village to small village.
Machado has the bandits confront a particular dilemma in each episode while the series runs as a continuous story.
A parallel narrative is given intermittent scene sequences as the bounty hunters look for clues as to the bandits’ whereabouts.
By episode 3, Maria gives birth to a daughter, which might have complicated the running and hiding from government agent a bit had she not then decided to leave the child with relatives.
The presence of the daughter in the script proves to be a source of reversal as Maria misses her child and seems to grow into the idea of raising a family, although knowing deep down inside the futility of such a dream.
An informant close to the family tells the bounty hunters when Maria and Lampiao will arrive for their daughter’s babtism.
Betrayal becomes a bit of a theme in each episode as the folk heroes struggle to maintain the respect of the people in the villages that they visit. Lampiao knows he must punish the person who has betrayed them in order to deter others.
A score carries transition scenes as the characters take to horseback and keep moving through the hinterland.
By episode 4, Maria has begun to dream big, almost in denial that escape is no longer possible. Lampiao develops tuberculosis and must find a place to rest or otherwise face sure death from the lung disease.
The love birds decide on buying property in a neighboring country, along the coast, where they can be reunited with their daughter while Lampiao recovers. Unfortunately, people are desperately poor and the trusted land agents decide to take their money by defrauding them of their purchase.
This betrayal keeps the outlaws on the run for a bit longer.
By episode 5, word of the folk heroes has spread around the world, but many people do not believe they are real. A photographer arrives to create documentary material with the promise of more people donating to their cause if they know they are real through the publication of photographs and film shorts.
The publicity seems to create a backlash with a more concerted effort by the government to capture them while not everyone in the villages welcomes them.
At one point in the narrative, Maria is captured and used for bait to catch Lampiao. The bandits free her though by staging an ambush, although Maria is shot in the back while trying to escape.
Lampiao and now Maria must rest, and several months go by before a new trap is set for them by the bounty hunters, who have an informant telling them how to find the bandits.
Machado spends a lot of time with character development, creating compelling scenes sequences by posing the question of whether people should feel empathy for Maria Bonita or fear her.
The 6 part series is interesting, with several poignant moments worth waiting for.
Maria e o Cangaco is streaming on Disney+ in Canada.
