For young women, life can be difficult in a mysterious world much of which has been manipulated by previous generations to the benefit of others.

Saoirse Ronan plays the young matriarch pushing boundaries in that difficult and challenging unfamiliar world.

In Mary Queen of Scots (2018) Mary is sent to France to become Queen by marrying the King of France while her cousin rules England. But when the King dies, Mary leaves the continent to rule Scotland. Ronan shows how Mary Stuart was born to rule to such an extent that her more powerful cousin becomes a bit too uncomfortable.

In Lady Bird (2017) Ronan plays a young adolescent weary of the boundaries thrown up by her mother’s generation. Lady Bird struggles, but she also learns how to deal with life her own way. Ronan shows how her character eventually finds room to love her mother again. This coming-of-age film is directed and written by Greta Gerwig.

Ronan also plays a young women torn between two men when making the most important decision of her young adult life in Brooklyn (2015).  

Eilis is one of thousands of young Irish men and women immigrating to New York for prospects of a better life in America. Eilis though must return home to Ireland just as her life is about to begin again in New York. Ronan shows how to endure the great moral struggles to make good choices early in life.

So far, Ronan has found no barrier too great in her acting career with four Oscar nominations already for performances in Little Women (2019), Lady Bird (2017), Brooklyn (2015), and Atonement (2007).
